كشفت صحيفة «هآرتس» العبرية عن تحرّكات أميركية تهدف إلى ترتيب لقاء بين رئيس الجمهورية جوزاف عون ورئيس وزراء الاحتلال بنيامين نتنياهو، في وقت تتواصل فيه الاعتداءات الإسرائيلية على لبنان، وتتراجع فرص التوصل إلى تفاهم بين واشنطن وطهران.
وبحسب الصحيفة، فإن الإدارة الأميركية تنظر إلى هذا اللقاء كفرصة لتحقيق اختراق سياسي سريع، بعد تعثّر مسار المفاوضات مع إيران، وفشل الجهود الأميركية في دفع السعودية نحو مفاوضات علنية مع تل أبيب. وترى أن الرئيس الأميركي دونالد ترامب يبحث عن «إنجاز رمزي» يمكن تسويقه سياسياً، عبر صورة تجمع عون ونتنياهو في واشنطن.
واعتبرت «هآرتس» أن مجرد العمل على جمع الطرفين في لقاء مباشر يُعد خطوة «دراماتيكية»، تعكس حجم الضغوط الأميركية لإنتاج مشهد سياسي جديد في المنطقة، خصوصاً في ظل الجمود الذي يواجهه البيت الأبيض في أكثر من ملف إقليمي.
في المقابل، أشارت الصحيفة إلى أن نتنياهو لا يجد سبباً لرفض الفكرة، إذ يرى فيها مكسباً سياسياً مجانياً، في وقت يواصل فيه الجيش الإسرائيلي عملياته العسكرية في جنوب لبنان من دون أن تضطر إسرائيل إلى تقديم أي تنازل فعلي، سواء عبر الانسحاب أو وقف الحرب بشكل كامل.
أما في الجانب اللبناني، فنقلت الصحيفة أن الرئيس جوزاف عون يتعامل بحذر شديد مع الطرح الأميركي، معتبراً أن أي لقاء من هذا النوع يجب أن يأتي بعد إنهاء المواجهة، لا في ظل استمرار العمليات العسكرية وتدمير القرى الجنوبية. كما أشارت إلى وجود مخاوف داخلية لبنانية من أن يشكّل لقاء علني مع نتنياهو «تجاوزاً لخط أحمر»، بما قد يؤدي إلى ردود فعل واسعة في الداخل اللبناني.
ورأت الصحيفة أن استعجال واشنطن لتحقيق «صورة نصر» قد يحمل تداعيات خطرة، خصوصاً مع استمرار القتال في الجنوب ووجود أعداد كبيرة من النازحين، معتبرة أن أي خطوة غير محسوبة قد تنعكس سلباً على الاستقرار الهش في لبنان.
وفي سياق المقارنة التاريخية، أعادت «هآرتس» التذكير باتفاق 17 أيار عام 1983 بين لبنان وإسرائيل، واصفة إياه بـ«الاتفاق الممتاز» الذي سقط بسبب الظروف الداخلية اللبنانية آنذاك وضعف السلطة السياسية. واعتبرت أن التجربة السابقة تُشكّل تحذيراً من محاولات فرض تسويات سياسية قبل نضوج الظروف اللازمة لها.
وختمت الصحيفة بالتأكيد أن الدفع نحو لقاء سريع بين عون ونتنياهو قد يهدّد المسار القائم بدل دعمه، معتبرة أن «التقاط صورة سياسية» لا يكفي لصناعة تسوية حقيقية في ظل الظروف الحالية.
The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz revealed US efforts aimed at arranging a meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at a time when Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue and chances of reaching an understanding between Washington and Tehran are declining.
According to the newspaper, the US administration views such a meeting as an opportunity to achieve a quick political breakthrough after negotiations with Iran stalled and after American efforts to push Saudi Arabia toward open talks with Tel Aviv failed. It believes that President Donald Trump is seeking a “symbolic achievement” that can be politically marketed through a photo bringing Aoun and Netanyahu together in Washington.
Haaretz considered that merely working to bring the two sides together in a direct meeting is a “dramatic” step reflecting the scale of US pressure to produce a new political scene in the region, especially amid the stagnation facing the White House on several regional files.
On the other hand, the newspaper noted that Netanyahu sees no reason to reject the idea, considering it a free political gain, while the Israeli army continues its military operations in southern Lebanon without Israel having to make any actual concession, whether through withdrawal or a complete halt to the war.
As for the Lebanese side, the newspaper reported that President Joseph Aoun is dealing with the American proposal with great caution, believing that any meeting of this kind should come after the confrontation ends, not while military operations and the destruction of southern villages continue. It also pointed to internal Lebanese concerns that a public meeting with Netanyahu would cross a “red line,” potentially provoking broad reactions inside Lebanon.
The newspaper argued that Washington’s rush to secure a “victory photo” could carry dangerous consequences, especially with the ongoing fighting in the south and the large number of displaced people, warning that any miscalculated move could negatively affect Lebanon’s fragile stability.
In a historical comparison, Haaretz recalled the May 17 Agreement of 1983 between Lebanon and Israel, describing it as an “excellent agreement” that collapsed due to Lebanon’s internal conditions at the time and the weakness of political authority. The paper considered the previous experience a warning against attempts to impose political settlements before the necessary conditions are mature.
The newspaper concluded by stressing that pushing for a quick meeting between Aoun and Netanyahu could threaten the current path rather than support it, arguing that “taking a political photo” is not enough to create a real settlement under the current circumstances.
